Ex-MOSOP President Wants Action On Climate Change
The immediate past President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) Mr Legborsi Pyagbara has called on government at all levels in the country to put in place measures towards tackling all incidences of climate change in the country.
Pyagbara said this in a farewell address at the 28th annual Ogoni Day Celebration at Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area.
He said the climate issue has gone beyond politics and geography, adding that it is a development issue.
According to him, time has come for government to confront the issue before it is too late.
Pyagbara who was elected president of the movement in 2013, posted some of his achievements to include the on-going implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on the cleanup of Ogoniland, development of a template for natural resource exploration in Ogoniland as well as the internationalisation of MOSOP activities.
He warned the Ogonis not to allow themselves to be used to destablise their communities, stressing that the annual Ogoni day celebration must be used to forge greater unity in the kingdom.
Meanwhile the apex Ogoni socio cultural organisation, Kagote has decried the slow pace of the cleanup exercise in Ogoniland.
President of the organisation, Hon. Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah who said this in his address at the 28th Ogoni Day Celebration at Bori, said Kagote will engage the Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Project (HYPREP) with a view to fast tracking the cleanup exercise.
Hon. Deeyah also decried the near absence of economic activities in Ogoniland, which according to him has encouraged insecurity and banditry in the area.
“Our languages are almost extinct, our cultural practices adulterated.
“We plan to engage and work with our elders and chiefs including experts of Ogoni extraction to revive our languages and literature,” he said.
Deeyah also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for not only initiating HYPREP but also appointing sons and daughters of Ogoni into various positions.
He praised Governor Wike for the appointment of Ogoni sons and daughters into positions of authority in his government.
Meanwhile, secretary of the MOSOP transition committee, Mr Bariara Kpalap said the committee will engage HYPREP to ensure a holistic implementation of the UNEP report.
He told The Tide in an interview that some aspects of the report, especially the provision of water and health facilities for the people are being neglected.
