FG To Spend N678bn On Dam Projects
The Federal Government has proposed to spend N678 billion to execute various dam projects across the country over the next two years.
If completed, the projects would not only enhance irrigation activities, but also boost potable water supply as well as increase hydropower generation.
The proposal is contained in an investment plan document obtained our correspodent from the Ministry of Water Resources on Thursday in Abuja.
The document is titled “Proposed Infrastructure Project/Programme for Long-Term Financing by Multilateral/Bilateral institutions”.
It showed that seven dam projects were expected to be completed within the period.
According to the document, N234 billion is expected to be spent in 2011, N237 billion in 2012 and N206 billion in 2013 to complete the seven dam projects.
The document listed the seven projects to include Gurara Phase III Multipurpose Dam project in Kaduna, Dadin Kowa Irrigation project in Gombe and Ibu Dam in Imo state.
Others are Isampou, Kolo and Perimabiri Rice project in Bayelsa State, Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State and Yedsaram Dam in also in Adamawa State.
According to the document, the Gurara Phase III project is expected to generate 300 megawatts of hydropower and also boost water supply for people living in the catchment areas.
“The Dadin Kowa irrigation project is required to provide 40,000 hectares for rice and 10,000 hectares to be developed for rice in Isampou project as well as the development of 71 hectares of land at Ibu Dam.
“The Dasin Hausa Dam, a multipurpose dam project is expected to produce 250 to 300 megawatts of electricity as well as 200,000 hectares for irrigation.
“The Yedsaram Dam will deliver water supply to Maiduguri and 300 hectares for irrigation,” it said.
