Rivers Works Ministry Spends N220bn In Three Years
The Rivers State Ministry of Works spent not less than N220billion in the past three years, the immediate past state Commissioner for Works, Hon Dakuku Peterside has said.
Hon Peterside made this known in a phone in media programme organised by Silverbird Communications over the weekend in Port Harcourt.
The former Works Commissioner explained that the expenditure was part of the budget set aside for the ministry, adding that all contracts awarded were done transparently and according to international best practices.
He debunked the view that he fronted his private companies to handle some of the contracts, saying, “there was no single case where we awarded contracts interally.”
In what appeared to be an account of his stewardship, the former Works Commissioner said he also instituted some reforms in the execution and award of contracts, which include quality control, documentation of contracts and strict supervision.
Through strict supervision, he said that projects were duly monitored and standards ensured, noting that there were no contracts awarded by the ministry that were not completed or about to be completed.
Peterside said that the state government had so far commissioned not fewer than 10 road projects including Rumuokwuta/ Rumuola Road, Rumuomasi/Artillery Road, among others.
Commenting on the ministry’s zero potholes scheme, the PDP Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro federal constituency candidate, said the programme was purely interventionist as the road rehabilitation committee was ill-equipped to tackle the challenge at that time.
According to Peterside, there were a lot of issues at that time because the committee was not equipped as the ministry to tackle the road failure problems at that time. “And so because of the huge complaints and road decay, the ministry came in to rescue the situation”, he said
He, however, agreed that the project was not 100 per cent success but an interim measure to tackle road decay and reduce the plight of motorists.
On whether he persuaded some contractors to sponsor his political ambition, the PDP House of Representatives candidate denied, saying that he only enjoyed goodwill from friends, the party and supporters and would never use his office to extort contractors.
