Lawmaker Commiserates With Bakana Boat Owners Over Hijack Of Vessels
The member representing Degema Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Anthony Soberekon, has commiserated with members of the Bakana Marine Boat-Owners Association over the recurrent hijacking of passenger-boats plying the Bakana waterways.
Hon. Soberekon, who visited the Boat Owners at Abonnema Wharf water front last Wednesday, expressed sympathy to all those whose boats were stolen.
He advised the Boat Owners not to despair as government was working assiduously to improve security on the water
ways.
“The governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, will soon surmount all security issues, especially on our waters, while I am also working with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to ensure that security on our waterways is improved’, he said.
Soberekon continued that he would support the boat owners in getting live jackets for safety and urged them to go about their lawful business without fear, while also expressing confidence that security agents would soon apprehend the hijackers.

The state legislator also used the opportunity to advise the youths to refrain from criminal activities, saying that all hands must be on deck to rid our communities of deviant elements who threaten our collective peace and security.
Welcoming the Assembly member to Abonnema Wharf, the Chairman of the Boat Owners’ Union, Mr. Dein Davies, appealed to government to deploy enough security on the waterways enroute Bakana.
It would be recalled that two speed boats were taken away by hoodlums in the last two weeks, though no life were lost in the incidents.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Degema Local Government Council, Dr Tony Philmoore, has met with the Boat Owners and drivers Union in a bid to finding lasting solution to the security issues.
He promised his administration’s commitment to bring the perpetrators and all criminals in the area to justice.
