Ogoni Clean-Up: HYPREP Okays Work Of Contractors
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), says it is satisfied with work so far carried out by contractors at the 21 sites where remediation is going on in Ogoniland in Rivers State.
HYPREP’s Project Coordinator, Dr Marvin Dekil, who gave this indication while interacting with newsmen in Port Harcourt recently, said the agency was satisfied with the work being done by the contractors at the various sites.
According to him, his office has been monitoring and supervising what the contractors are doing at the sites.
He further indicated that all the 21 contractors for the 21 lots have moved to the clean-up sites in all the four Ogoni-speaking local government areas of Eleme, Tai, Khana and Gokana, and expressed delight over what was currently going on at the sites.
Dekil said some of the contractors were currently building bio-cells at the sites while others had reached advanced stages of cleaning up the environment through the biological approach being adopted at the less complex sites, and expressed optimism that work would begin at the more complex sites as soon as procurement processes are concluded.
He noted that several individuals and organisations have been taken to the sites to see things for themselves, stressing that HYPREP would continue to keep its doors open for such inspection visits.
The Project Coordinator said though the core mandate of HYPREP is to remediate oil spill impacted sites, it would equally provide emergency measures such as potable drinking water to impacted communities in Ogoniland, adding that machinery has been put in place for that purpose.
He reiterated that remediation work takes time, and assured that what was being done currently in Ogoniland would be replicated in other communities in the Niger Delta at the end of the day.
