Expert Decries State Of Fisheries Dept. In RSUST
Chairman, Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) Rivers State branch, Dr. Awoteinm D.I. George has called on the Rivers State Government to up-grade the falling standard of the fisheries department in the Rivers State University of Science and technology (RSUST).
Dr. George, a lecturer at the Fisheries Department of RSUST, who stated this in an exclusive interview with The Tide, Friday, noted that the Fisheries Department of RSUST was the pioneer degree awarding institution in Nigeria but there had been less investment in the department.
According to him, the department has been neglected for so long, and no practical work is done in the department to encourage students to be interested in the department.
“The Fisheries Department has been neglected for years, no equipment to work with, no facilities for practices as well as trainings that will encourage students to seek admission into the unit.
As a way forward, Dr. George appealed to the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, to award scholarships to students offering such courses in RSUST and equip the department.
He further said efforts should also be made to facilitate the Fisheries edict in order to attract donor Agencies to partner with the state in the area of fisheries activities.
“Several attempts had been made to ensure that the Fisheries edict is passed but to no avail. The disadvantage is that it does not give the state the required recognition for interested international bodies because there is no regulation in the state”, he said.
One of the students who spoke to The Tide on condition of anonymity said because of the situation she found herself, there is no option but to see what the future holds for her.
“A Department where one cannot get involved in practical activities, I wonder what it will become when I go to the field. I cannot say much but the government should do something to revitalise the department to enable it compete favourably with our counterparts in other institutions, she said.
