Exhibit Spirit Of Sportsmanship, Bishop Tasks Politicians
As the count down to the April 2011 general election begins, the Catholic Bishop of Port Harcourt ,Most Rev. Camillus Etokudoh, has appealed to politicians to abide by the rules of the game and exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship.
Bishop Etokudoh made the appeal yesterday in his homily at the Thanksgiving Mass in honour of Dame Judith Amaechi, wife of the Rivers State Governor, who survived a critical domestic accident in 2008, at the Corpus Christi Cathedral, Kaduna Street, Port Harcourt.
The clergyman said the period of transition required prayers for the nation and advised Christians to register in the ongoing voters registration exercise to vote for credible candidates of their choice that would help to move the country forward.
He prayed God to guide the country to have a successful election this year and charged Christians to have faith in the Almighty God to enable them receive their blessings.
In his remarks at the occasion, the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, thanked the people of the state and the church for their encouragement and support to his family throughout the trying period.
In her testimony, wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi recalled that on the 6th of June 2008, in Abuja, she had a domestic accident which fractured one of her legs.
Mrs. Amaechi described her healing as divine work of God and thanked the clergymen, friends of her family, people of the state and other well wishers for their prayerful support during the period of her ordeal.
She said the essence of the thanksgiving service was to appreciate God for all the good things He had done in their family and thanked her husband for standing with her and the people of Rivers State for supporting the Governor.
The first lesson of the Mass was read by Governor Amaechi while his wife, Judith, read the second.
The event featured goodwill messages from the wives of governors of Imo, Bayelsa and Abia States, as well as a special thanksgiving.
