Stakeholder Wants Indigenous Participation In Shipping Industry
A member of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Captain Jimoh Ajaye (rtd), has called on indigenous shipping operators to fully participate in all commercial services in the shipping industry so as to stimulate the growth and development of the sector.
Captain Ajayi who made the call on Tuesday in Port Harcourt when he visited the Dock Labour Hall in Port Harcourt Port Complex, lamented the poor participation of Nigerians in the nation’s shipping industry.
Ajayi who was a former captain of M/V Jammy Sato, said the Nigerian Chamber of Shippings’ primary objective was to ensure that the Nigerian Shipping Industry participate fully in all commercial services within Nigerian territorial waters in an effort to support the local-content development policy of the Federal Government.
According to him, “this is to stimulate the development of indigenous companies and encourage foreign investment and participation without compromising quality, health, safety and environmental standards. The good news, is that there are positive signs of recovery in the world wide economy and as well in the Nigerian economy, especially after the banking sector reforms and with the dynamic and purposeful administration of Presidnet Goodluck Jonathan in taking decisive steps to enact the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Bill in April, 2010, which seeks to address the compelling need for us as a nation to have indigenous participation in the oil and gas industry.”
He urged stakeholders to be more committed so as to stimulate the growth and development of the sector.
