Yobe NUJ Tasks Govt On Condition Of State Owned Media
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe State Council, has tasked the state government to pay more attention to the state owned media organisations and ensure training and retraining of its staff.
NUJ Chairman, Yobe Council, Mr Yusuf Isah, gave the charge yesterday in Damaturu, the state capital, in commemoration the World Press Freedom Day.
“Yobe government should pay more attention to the state owned media and ensure training and retraining of its staff, as well as provide digital equipment to ease their work, to enable the organisations compete with other media houses, he said.
He also urged journalists to adhere to ethics of fairness, accuracy, objectivity, balance, and other ideals that guide the profession.
“He said on this occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I urge you to rededicate yourselves to the role of being watchdogs of society, while being mindful of the ethics to protect yourself from the law.”
The chairman noted that the theme of this year’s celebration, “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”, is quite timely.
“The media and journalists should reflect on the damaging effect of fake news, misinformation and disinformation before, during and after the polls.
“We should also set the agenda for the incoming government and follow up all the campaign promises and social contracts signed by the politicians.
“This must reflect in our federal, state and local governments’ budget and should track and give citizens voice,” Isah added.
