NAN To Become Hub Of Information Ministry’s Sporting Activities – Oyo
Mrs Oluremi Oyo, the Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has said that the agency would soon become a rallying point for sporting activities among parastatal agencies of the Ministry of Information and Communications.
Oyo said this in Abuja on Saturday at the end of the maiden edition of NAN Table Tennis Tournament.
“NAN will become the hub of sporting activities for all agencies in the information ministry; we are proud to be trailblazers and together, we will continue to soar high,” she said.
Oyo said that the table tennis competition had come to stay, adding that it would be made an annual event with contestants drawn from all NAN offices across the country.
The Managing Director said that the organisation of the tournament was spurred by the management’s commitment to promoting the wellbeing of the staff.
“The Board of NAN is very serious about the welfare of all staff and we will continue to do more for them,’’ she said.
Besides, Oyo announced that from January 2011, the last Friday of every month would be dedicated to sports in NAN, as a way of encouraging sports in the agency.
“It is important that you look after your bodies; you should exercise and stay healthy. Beginning from January 2011, every last Friday of the month will be dedicated to sports,” she said.
Oyo also announced that an ultra-modern gymnasium would be set up at the Abuja headquarters of NAN in the first quarter of 2011.
Also speaking, Dr Olusegun Ajuwon, former Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja, urged other government agencies to encourage their workforce to participate in sporting activities so as to remain fit and healthy.
“NAN has introduced table tennis; others can introduce swimming, basket ball or any other sport. The idea is to get members of staff to do a particular sport.
“ It is good for the body system and it also enhances workers’ productivity,’’ Ajuwon said.
The table tennis tournament, which started on Monday, December 13, featured about 60 contestants in the singles, doubles and departmental categories.
Some dignitaries, who witnessed the finals include Mr Yomi Bolarinwa, Director-General of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and Chief Olusegun Runsewe, Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), among others.
