Gowon Tasks Nigerians On Prayers
Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has said Nigerian leaders need prayers to guide them as the 2011 general elections draw nearer.
Gowon, the Chief Convener of Nigeria Prays, said this in Benin last Sunday when he paid courtesy call on Edo Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
“We are here to pray for Nigeria and to pray particularly for our leadership at the Federal, State , Local Government and various levels, including religious leaders.
“We will also pray for the well-being of the people. We will pray for the leadership that God would guide them to do the right things for the people,’’ he added.
Gowon said he was “going round to sensitise and ask the people to join us. The body of conveners of Nigeria Prays appreciate what you have been doing.
I hope that God will answer our prayers and wish you well in everything you do,” Gowon told Oshomhole.
Responding, Oshiomhole agreed that Nigeria needs a lot of prayers to confront the myriad of challenges facing it. “I believe what you are doing sir, in a way, sends down several messages to our people.’’
The governor commended the former leader for the roles he had been playing, out of office, stressing that he is a patriotic Nigerian.
Oshiomhole also said power belongs to God.“The power we exercise is on behalf of the people and can only be justified when it is used to touch their lives positively.”
