Herdsmen Set Ortom’s Rice Farm Ablaze
Suspected Fulani herdsmen have set on fire a rice farm in Gbajimba, Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of the state belonging to Governor Samuel Ortom on fire.
The fire which was ignited from three different points, had destroyed rice produce worth about N100 million, covering about 250 hectares.
The Farm Manager, Kena Iordzua, who disclosed this while conducting newsmen round the farm yesterday, explained that the armed herdsmen had come with a large number of cattle and set the farm ablaze.
He further stated that due to the harmattan, the fire spread fast and consumed the rice farm despite efforts by farm workers to contain the inferno.
The Manager noted that security agents who were mobilised and went in pursuit of the herdsmen could not apprehend them as they quickly retreated back into Nasarawa state.
Also speaking to newsmen, Principal Special Assistant to the governor on Special Duties, Abraham Kwaghngu, described the act as “barbaric and a threat to food security.”
While he called on the “Federal Government to act fast to stop the impunity of herdsmen”, Kwaghngu lamented that after displacing people from their ancestral homes, the herdsmen would not allow the little that has been cultivated to be harvested.
Meanwhile, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has urged the people to remain faithful and trust in God for guidance and success in the face of challenges.
Ortom who stated this in his new year message, congratulated the good people of the State and other Nigerians on the successful crossover to year 2019.
In the message which was signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Terver Akase, the Governor appreciated God for taking Benue through what he described as a turbulent year 2018, and stated that 2019 is a year of victory for the people of the state.
“Governor Ortom also implores the people to sustain their support of his administration and security agencies in peace building, to guarantee the safety of lives and property. He says 2019 is a decisive year for the country as Nigerians prepare to go to the polls to choose their leaders.
“The Governor expresses the hope that this year’s elections will be hitch-free, fair and credible, stressing that no form of manipulation of the electoral process will succeed. Governor Ortom wishes Benue people a prosperous New Year.”
