RSG Targets 500Mega Watts In 2011
The present administration in Rivers State has promised to increase its Independent Power Project (IPP) to 500mw under the $195 million 180mw gas turbine being constructed by Saipem Nigeria Limited by June 2011.
The state governor, Rt. Hon Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, announced this at the unveiling of “The Taste of Rivers: the Brand Unveiling of Rivers State Change Has Come”, last Thursday in Port Harcourt.
Describing power as a key factor in the socio-economic development of the state, the governor said the already constructed three power stations were aimed at addressing power challenges in the state.
It would be recalled that 150mw Omoku Power state, 130mw station at Trans Amadi as well as an additional 75 mw station had been constructed in the state.
Unfortunately, the inability of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to evacuate the power generated from the state power stations remains one challenge to the good efforts of the state government.
Mr. Emmanuel Ogba, a Port Harcourt-based businessman commended Governor Amaechi on the determination of his administration towards complementing the Federal Government efforts on power generation but expressed dismay over what he termed “frustration of the state government effort” by the inability of PHCN to evacuate the generated power.
Mr. Ogba, Managing Director of Nedal Nigeria Limited, an oil and gas company said it is a huge waste for a state to spend resources in generating power that cannot ultimately get to the people it targets to serve.
There is an urgent need therefore, for the distribution of power to move from the exclusive list in the nation’s constitution and be shared between states and the federal”, he said.
In a similar development, some communities in Ahoada West local government area now enjoy improved power generation as the council has provided 8 kilometre high tension rural electrification for Upatabo, 9 kilometre high tensions rural electrification scheme for Ula-Ubie with 2 x 200KVA transformers to each of the communities.
The council chairman, Hon. Awori Milla, who announced this over the weekend, said in Omoku community, similar project was also executed with a 3 x 200KVA transformers as well as linking them to the national grid.
Hon. Milla said his administration’s rural electrification project was aimed at boosting socio-economic life in the area and noted that the determination of his administration to complement the state government’s effort on rural electrification is unwavering.
