Cleric Preaches Against Domestic Violence Affecting Women
Chairman of Ojo Local Government Area, Mr Idowu Olushola, represented by his Deputy, Mrs Edna Uche-Ubochi, said that the state government was implementing policies against the menace to nip the problem in the bud.
Olushola said that several women were suffering in silence and lauded the campaign aimed at overcoming the challenges.
“Women are taken as weaker vessels but they are not weak. What the women are asking for is an opportunity to make a difference; right to education; and right to inheritance,’’ he said.
The Festac Deanery Coordinator of the group, Mr Onyema Onyenankeya, stressed the need for Nigeria to key into the global sustainable development goal which had to do with gender equality.
“As a group we have over the years been highlighting the ways to treat people equally. As a matter of fact, JDPC believe that what is good for the male child is also good for the female child.
“We also believe that for a nation to develop, women should be accorded their respect based on their ability not on sex.
“We believe that no nation can develop if a sizeable number of that nation is marginalised like the women.
“By deliberate consideration, our women should be heard but there are structures and circumstances that are inhibiting their progress.
“If only women come together, there is nothing they cannot achieve. Politics and politicking are not meant for men alone.
“In our constitution women have the same right as men,’’ he said.
The UN in 2000 set aside November 25 as the annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to raise public awareness on the issue.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations.
