IPC Trains 40 Journalists On Electoral Reportage
Atwo-day media training programme on ‘Best Practices and Professional Reporting of the Electoral Process’ organised by the International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos, and funded by European Union under the Sustainable Democracy Governance in Nigeria, for 40 media practitioners in the South-South and South-East had climaxed in Enugu State with a call for Nigerian journalists to report elections and other issues in accordance with best recognised international standard.
A statement signed by the Director, IPC, Mr Lanre Arogundade, indicated that “the training seeks to build a professional media as catalyst of democratic accountability, credible elections and good governance”.
Arogundade called on political reporters to bring to the front burner the professional and ethical standard of journalism profession, while also putting into considerations their safety, which he said was paramount.
Arogundade, who was represented by the programme Manager, Stella Nwofia, enjoined reporters to abide by the global trends to create equal opportunities for Nigerian politicians, noting that it was imperative for journalists to be unbiased, accurate, free and fair in their reportage
According to him, “It is expected that the media during the 2019 general elections with the facilitation of election stakeholders in Nigeria will follow the global trends in the use media as a political communication tool to create equal opportunities for Nigerian politicians and political parties to tap into the opportunities offered by media to reach and engage their constituents and voters as well as use the media tools to improve the efficiency of election observation.”
