Review Contributory Pension Scheme, Pensioners Beg RSG
Pensioners under the aegis of Rivers State Pensioners Association have called for the review of the State Contributory Pension Scheme passed into law in 2012.
The pensioners made public their view during a protest march last Wednesday at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, as the House leaders addressed them.
Leader of the pensioners Mr. Lucky Atteh intimated the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani that the law has made it difficult for the pensioners to get their gratuity and other benefits.
He revealed that since after the State Contributory Pension Law was passed, the State has not met its own obligation of paying its own part of the scheme.
The current situation according to Atteh has made it difficult for majority of the pensioners to receive their gratuity even after leaving service five years ago.
“We are saying that instead of waiting until government gets that bulk money, please abrogate the law”, Atteh said, “At least that will let us get something that we can eat with”.
Responding, the Speaker promised that their demand will be forwarded to the executive to be studied, “as a legislature we will interface with the executive.
“We know that you people are our mothers and fathers and this government stands on justice”, he stressed.
Rt. Hon. Ibani thanked the pensioners for their peaceful conduct, and assured them that they will do what is right to move the state forward.
He further urged the pensioners to be patient and not to stop supporting the Chief Wike administration, which he said has made civil servants and pensioners’ welfare a matter of priority since inception in 2015.
