Expert Tasks Govt On Climate Change
An expert, Dr Victor Fodeke, has stressed the need for government at all levels to sensitise the grassroots on the adverse effects of Climate Change.
Fodeke, who is the head, Climate Change Special Unit, Federal Ministry of Environment, gave the advice in Abuja on Thursday at a workshop on Communicating Climate Change.
The workshop was organised by Nigeria Climate Action Network (Nigeriacan), a coalition of NGOs on the environment, with the aim of promoting the efforts of the government, organisations and individuals on Climate Change in Nigeria.
Fodeke said there was a need for the government to involve the grassroots in efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impact of Climate Change because of their strategic position in national development.
“Community awareness creation on the adaptive measures embarked upon by government to mitigate the impact of Climate Change has become imperative.
“The local communities should be carried along for proper understanding of the issues involved in Climate Change,’’ he said.
Fodeke also urged the Nigerian media to assist stakeholders in communicating issues on Climate Change to the local people by reducing the technical languages on the issue to their understanding.
The media have a strategic role to play in creating awareness on the dangers of Climate Change and adaptation strategies aimed at mitigating its impact, he said.
The director said that for local communities to adapt to the looming adverse consequences of the phenomenon, the media must be strategic partners in awareness creation.
Earlier, Mr. Ewah Eleri, the director of the coalition, charged Nigerian negotiators at Climate Change talks not to compromise the country’s interest.
“In all the negotiations, national interest should come first, it should be able to drive our position.
“Economic, environment, national security and international relations in Climate Change should be our divining force during negotiations, “ he said.
Eleri commended the media for the important role they played in the harmonisation of the Climate Change Commission Bill between the House of Representatives and the Senate.
