Lecturer Seeks Flood Routing On Rivers Niger, Kaduna
The Federal Government has been urged to carry out ‘flood routing’ on rivers Niger and Kaduna to enable it to study the flood level at the downstream of the three major dams located on both rivers.
The dams are Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro.
Dr Abdul Salami, a lecturer at the University of Ilorin, made the call on Friday in Abuja in a paper presented at a workshop on Reservoir Operation in Nigerian Dams.
Sources told The Tide that the workshop was organised by the Department of Dams and Reservoir Operations, Federal Ministry of Water Resources.
The workshop was held to sensitise stakeholders in the dam industry on the need to re-examine their strategy in reservoir planning and operations.
In his paper entitled,“An Overview on Reservoir Operational Impact of Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro dams on the Environment,’’ Salami of the Department of Civil Engineering, said flood routing would enable the authorities to predict flood waves accurately.
“Forecasting of flood level and quick awareness will assist the downstream communities to vacate,’’ he said.
He said that it would also help the government to checkmate the perennial flooding in the areas and embark on mitigation measures.
“Flood routing will help to predict what is likely to happen in time of flood flow and enable the government to take mitigation measures,’’ he said.
Salami recommended the enactment of a local content law for hydropower dams to enable local communities around dam sites to get involved in the operations of the dams to give them a sense of belonging.
Speaking earlier while declaring the workshop open, Amb. Godknows Igali, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, attributed the cause of perennial flooding in Nigeria and across the world to global warming.
Represented by Dr Emmanuel Adanu, the Director of the Department of Dams and Reservoir Operations, Igali stressed the need for the government to study the phenomenon and take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of global warming.
