Rivers Deputy Speaker Brokers Peace In Ogoni Communities
The Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Dumnamene Deekor, has brokered peace in two warring communities of Sogho and Kpong in Ogoniland.
The crisis between the two Ogoni neighbouring communities reportedly claimed one life and left four others seriously injured.
Addressing the people of Sogho and Kpong communities at seperate meetings held in their respective community play grounds Sunday, Hon Dumnamene Deekor, stated that the present administration in the state under the leadership of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi abhorred violence in its entirety.
Hon Deekor said that the State governor had done very well for the people of Ogoni ethnic extraction through execution of various developmental projects in the area and urged the Ogonis to reciprocate government gesture by being peaceful at all times.
He maintained that no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere of rancour, adding that no reasonable government would like to embark on any project in a community where there is no peace.
According to him, “land is God’s given natural resources to man that can be beneficial to man and the society at large when put in to better use”.
Hon Deekor, representing Khana Constituency II told the people of the communities to join hands with the state government to fas to track development in the area through peace process regretting the communal crisis that had taken its tolls despite vast intellectuals abound in the area.
The lawmaker said peace/reconciliation committee after due consultations from both communities, would be inaugurated soon to resolve all grey areas concerning the land dispute and solicited co-operation from all to achieve result.
He therefore directed the warring communities to keep away from the disputed land pending when the peace and reconciliation committee would finish their work, adding that decisive measures await any community that would breach the directive.
He condoled and sympathised with the families of those who lost their loved ones as well as those who sustained injuries during the crisis and promised to pay off their medical expenses.
The lawmaker also commended the traditional rulers, police, SSS and the councillors for the roles they played during the period of the crisis that helped in restoring normalcy in both communities.
Speaking at Sogho community play ground, His Majesty, King W. Z. P. Nzidee (JP) (Mene Baa I) Gbenemene of Nyokhana commended Hon Dumnamene Deekor for the peace advocacy visit to the community and assured him of the support of his people to enable him restore permanent peace in the area.
King Nzidee however called on his people to be patient and eschew all forms of bitterness, assuring them of the confidence and ability of the deputy speaker in handling the matter to a logical conclusion.
