RSG Plans Sustainable Water Supply
The Rivers State government has signed a contract with a consultancy firm, Dar AL Handasan to conduct feasibility study and produce an engineering design for effective potable water supply to residents of the state capital.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Ms Patricia Simon-Hart, who signed on behalf of the governor, stated that the project is designed to upgrade existing water schemes and construct new ones that are expected to supply water to the Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor local government areas for the next 30-50 years.
According to Ms Simon-Hart, “this is the first time a proper and holistic approach to water supply programme is being embarked on”.
She observed that the obsolete water scheme designed in 1957, and rehabilitated in the 90s, but had no treatment plants could no longer meet the water needs of the state.
She emphasised that the implementation of the scheme would ensure adequate portable water supply to the domestic and industrial needs of residents in the two local government areas, adding that consumers would be expected to pay an affordable tariff on completion of the project.
Responding, the Project Manager, Dar AL Handasah, Faten Nazzal, expressed appreciation to the state government for giving his company the opportunity to serve the state.
