Be Law Abiding, Embrace Technology, Institute Urges Members

The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ISCAN) has called on secretaries to be compliant and abreast of the laws, acts and regulations governing their profession.
The call was made at an event tagged “Public Practice Day” in Lagos to ensure that secretaries and administrators have full knowledge of specific laws and regulations guiding their functions.
Mr Yomi Adebanjo, the guest speaker, said adherence to laid down rules and regulations was essential for growth and sustenance of any professional or organisation.
Adebanjo advised chartered secretaries to regularly be abreast of specific acts, laws and regulations that affect and influence their activities.
“As an environment in which business operations constantly changes, laws and regulations are introduced to address the dynamics.
“Acts like Companies and Allied Matters Acts, 2004, Investments and Security Acts, 2007, SEC Consolidated Rules, NAFDAC Acts, Trademark Acts and a host of others must be studied for use,” he said.
Adebanjo said that the goodwill of a company was not only measured by turnover and profitability, but also by public perception of the compliance of a company to rules and regulations.
Mr Samuel Kolawole, the President, Chairman in council ISCAN, urged secretaries to understand that their functions and capacities have evolved over time.
“The institute is fully equipped to train persons to operate as permanent secretaries, executive secretaries of organisations and professionals in corporate governance,” Kolawole said.
Nkechi Onyenso, the Registrar of ISCAN, said that the institute would sensitise the general public about the functions of secretaries.
“The Secretary of State is highly revered in the world.
“The institute has positioned itself to take its rightful stand with several sensitisation programmes propagating the message that we are administrative and governance professionals,” she said.
Leo Okafor, Group Company Secretary, United Capital, said with the increasing technological advancement in the corporate space, secretaries were advised to deploy technology to automate routine tasks and add value to their organisations.
