Activist Wants Control Of Alcohol Sale
A Niger Delta activist, Rev. Dr. Sokari Soberekon, has condemned the uncontrolled sale of alcohol by unlicenced dealers and underage hawkers.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Dr. Soberekon described the selling of alcoholic drinks without licence as a serious offence in Nigeria.
He advised Governor Nyesom Wike and the Rivers State House of Assembly to enforce the existing law that allows only adults from 18 years and above to sell alcoholic drinks with licence in approved alcoholic stores that permit only adults from 18 years and above to enter, adding that the law is global and has been existing in Nigeria before independence.
According to him, the sale of alcohol by unlicenced dealers and underage hawkers increases the rate of criminality and makes the preaching of the gospel ineffective in the lives of the youths, noting that most children who drink alcohol become disobedient to their parents and the word of God while some become nuisance in the society.
The gospel minister and human rights activist also advised Governor Wike to build VIP and general stands with toilet facilities and parking space at the Isaac Boro Park as it is at the Michael Okpara and Tafawa Balewa Squares at Enugu and Lagos, respectively.
He stated that the park had no toilet, alleging that people, including uniformed men, defecate at the back of the Park during parades and other events.
He appealed to the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike to build the Elekahia Mechanic Village, which according to him has become an eyesore.
