Sustainable Environment: EU Ready To Support RSG
The European Union (EU) has expressed its readiness to support the Rivers State Government in its effort at ensuring sustainable environmental programme in the state.
The EU representative for Micro Project programme (MPP3) in Port Harcourt, Mrs Kaine Bobmanuel said this in a solidarity message at the commissioning ceremony of Rivgreen Eco Libraries built by the Rivers State Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the centre for Development Support and Global Green Grants. The Eco Libraries are sited at Government Girls Secondary School Oromineke and Government Secondary School, Elekahia, all in Port Harcourt.
Mrs Bobmanuel said that the European Union is happy with the effort being made by the Rivers State Government in ensuring a clean and green environment in the state especially in Port Harcourt City and its environs.
Commissioning the project, the State Commissioner for Environment, Barrister Kingsley Chinda said that the project which is at its pilot stage was meant to inculcate environmental consciousness among school children.
Chinda explained that the programme was aimed at ensuring that the younger generations imbibe the virtue of environmental friendliness.
According to him, the scheme will also lead to the development of environmental education in school curriculum, stressing the need for children to make the best use of the project.
The commissioner noted that his ministry plans to fully equip the libraries with facilities that relate to the environment and expressed the hope that the library projects will help to expand the frontier of knowledge in environmental studies.
In her address, the Executive Director of the Centre for Development and Support Initiative (CEDSI) Mrs Mina Ogbanga said that the initiative is geared towards the setting up of environmental libraries across the state.
