Automotive Council To Check Sub-Standard Spare Parts Import
The Director-General, Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) Mr Jelani Aliyu, says the council is building testing centres to address substandard automotive spare parts in the country.
Aliyu said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, Friday.
He lamented that millions of vehicle spare parts were being imported into the country without proper check annually.
“The country is being used as dumping ground for fake vehicle parts, it is our mandate to ensure that Nigeria develop its own.
“Substandard automotive spare parts in motor vehicles often function improperly, or fail prematurely causing damages or drastic loss of efficiency to the affected vehicle.
“The implication of the failure of such substandard safety parts in vehicles is often very severe, leading in some cases to road crashes that could cause loss of lives, and in most cases resulting in financial losses, not just to vehicle owners but also to other road users,’’ he said.
Aliyu emphasised that motor parts items or non-safety items must conform to international standards at all times because their sudden failure in service may result in fatal crashes
He said that the council was training 3,200 technicians to work on vehicles, both imported and those produced in the country.
Aliyu said that the training became necessary because most mechanics in the country do guess job, thereby creating more damage to the vehicles.
According to him, the mandate of the council was to position Nigeria as one of the leading automotive manufacturing nations in the world.
He said that the council would also create an enabling environment for the manufacture of Nigerian made vehicles of international standard at competitive prices using local human and material resources.
