Expert Tasks FG On Domestic Debt Payment
An expert in the finance sector and the Chief Executive Officer of UT Financial Services (Nigeria) Limited, Ade Adebajo has urged the Federal and State Governments to prioritise domestic debt repayment so as to boost the economy.
He said that domestic debt value as at the end of 2017 stood at N3.35 trillion, according to the National Bureau of Statistics figure, while that of the foreign debt is put at $19.9 billion.
Adebajo who disclosed this to aviation correspondents at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa on a visit to Port Harcourt last Thursday, explained that domestic debt could be disturbing, considering its crowding effect on the private sector.
He said that government was actually squeezing the private sector from getting funding for investment and expansions, thereby making jobs and wealth creation difficult.
According to him, the stock of debt comprised that of the federal and many states but however opined that the growth in the stock of foreign debt was disturbing, considering the effort made in the recent past to exit debt.
“Focusing on payment of domestic debt would help to ease cash flow. I will advise government to priorities domestic debt repayment, especially for local contractors so that the local economy can deflate to ease cash flow.
“Government should avoid frivolous budget with huge debt content which eats up significant percentage of the budget in repayment. New sources of revenue and funding the budget must be sourced and prioritised”, he said.
The UT finance chief executive however opined that debt in itself may not be bad, but its utilisation, especially the corrupt attitude that gives room for diversion of resource from what it is meant for and advised government to be more cautious in incurring further debt.
