Rep Lists Gains Of Assets Tracking Initiative
Assets tracking, management system and creation of central and unified data base is a new initiative designed to enhance accountability, promote transparency and deepen efficiency, Rep. Hussaini Kangiwa, has said.
Kangiwa, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Governmental Affairs spoke at a two- day workshop on effective implementation of assets tracking and management system for states, MDAs and local governments in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.
He said the system would avail the government opportunity to know and monitor in real time, online information on the inventory of its assets, thereby enhancing effective and efficient utilisation of resources.
“Under chapter 26 of the Nigerian financial regulations, with regards to the disposal of assets, any assets not disposed of in accordance with the financial requirements will be deemed to have been illegally withheld or converted,” he said.
Kangiwa, who is representing Arewa and Dandi federal constituency of Kebbi, in the assembly, expressed optimism that asset tracking and register would make planning easier and improve accountability for assets .
In his remarks, Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, expressed regrets that assets belonging to the state government were not property tracked, registered, monitored and managed unlike the private sector.
“This gives room for theft, pilferage and waste of public resources,” he said.
Bagudu, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Sama’ila Yombe, called for reforms and urged the citizens to strive hard and protect the few assets provided by the government.
He urged the participants to utilise the knowledge they acquired for the improvement of their states, local government areas and the country at large.
The workshop was organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Governmental Affairs in collaboration with Go-Getters Consulting Limited.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the consulting firm, Mr Asiwaju Olakanmi, expressed the hope that the workshop would provide adequate skills for the participants to be able to promote positive change in the discharge of their duties.
