NGO Tasks Nigerians On Online Fund Raising
The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W-TEC) has advised Nigerians to take advantage of online means of raising funds.
The Executive Director of W-TEC, Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi, gave the advice at the 2018 Social Media Week Lagos which ended last Friday.
Lesi spoke on the topic: “Do It Yourself (DIY) Fundraising: All you need to know about Online Fundraising’’.
“Technology is reshaping how we interact and engage with each other and the global community.
“Africa’s development is being shaped by more local influencers and donors in both business and non-profit worlds; as such there is need to introduce the Nigerian public to online means of raising funds,” she said.
According to her, statistics shows that much donation is made nowadays through online platforms.
“Technology has essentially ‘democratised’ giving, and today there are more online fundraising platforms than one thinks,’’ Lesi said.
She said that donors would identify with genuine causes and people
She listed inadequate internet facilities, lack of trust and inadequate knowledge as some challenges facing online fundraising.
According to Lesi, mobile phones, electronic mail and multichannel fundraising platforms are shaping online giving.
She said that in DIY fundraising, it would be advisable to use more than one platform.
The executive director said that, before embarking on fundraising, one should make a checklist which should stipulate goals tied to a plan, timeline and persuasive narrative.
“Look at your goals and understand what you want to accomplish; determine if it will be a short-term or long-term fundraising.
“There is also need to create awareness, build a movement by getting people engaged.
“The audience-focus should tend toward age, educational level and location.
“This will ensure a good online fundraiser,’’ she said.
The Tide source reports that the 2018 Social Media Week Lagos, the sixth edition, had the theme: ‘Closer’.
It started on February 26 and ended on March 2.
The event featured discussions covering the future of media, travel, governance, gender inclusion, entertainment and emerging ideas and trends across the globe.
