Bayelsa CJ Assures On Prisons Bill
The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri has assured that a Federal Prisons Bill for the state will be ready by the last quarter of this year.
Justice Abiri stated this at Ahoada Federal Prisons in Rivers State while on jail delivery exercise.
Bayelsa State, created 14 years ago has no prison building and had been using the one at Ahoada for its convicted prisoners and inmates of Awaiting Trials.
Justice Abiri remarked that because of the importance of prisons in the society, the State Judiciary has taken it upon itself to ensure that the building was complete to avoid the incovenience suffered in transporting prisoners to courts in Bayelsa State from Ahoada.
Stressing that the jail delivery exercise was statutory duties of Chief Justices across the country, Justice Abiri said it is aimed at denspensing justice as quickly as possible so nobody suffers deprivation of rights unnecessarily.
She lamented that some of the inmates ought not to have remained in cells when they did not commit capital offences, saying that, “even those who committed capital offences have right to bail’’.
The Chief Judge expressed appreciation to the authorities of Ahoada \Prisons for their efficient movement of prisoners to and from Bayelsa courts, the improvement noticed in its facilities and the care for inmates from the state.
Some of those who were released are those who have stayed in ATM beyond the period they could have served if they had been convicted of their crimes and those who could not fulfill their bail conditions during the last jail delivery exercise.
