Govt Committed To Human Development – Commissioner
The Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence Nemi, has restated that the state government’s policy on human capital development and capacity building is irrevocable.
She made the statement in a goodwill message sent to a one-day workshop on the orientation and sensitisation of the New Senior Secondary School Curriculum for teachers organised by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) in Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner, who was represented by her Press Secretary, Mr. Kaldick Jamabo, enjoined participants to see the workshop as an opportunity to improve their skills in curriculum development in Rivers State, adding that the knowledge acquired would determine the values they would exhibit.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Professor Godswill Obioma, said NERDC is a key parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Education charged with the mandate of improving and sustaining the quality of education through the implementation of educational programmes.
Represented by Dr. Solomon Ibulubo, the NERDC boss disclosed that the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) was started in all Nigerian schools in September 2008, while that of the SSC Curriculum will commence in September, 2011.
Prof. Obioma stated that they have embarked on the massive advocacy and sensitization workshop on the use of curriculum in all the 36 states and Abuja to ensure quality implementation.
He continued that NERDC has designed a manual on development, selection and use of instructional materials from local resources, and has gone round the zones to orientate teachers on this manual.
He, therefore, charged the teachers to take advantage of the workshop, aimed at sensitizing them on the new SS Curriculum structure and content.
