ASALGA Chairman Gets N100m Boost For Performance
The Governor of Rivers State Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has announced a cash gift of N100 million to the Chairman of Asari Toru Local Government for effectively complementing the development strides of the state government.
Governor Amaechi, who made the pronouncement Friday during a Town Hall meeting at Buguma, said the Council Chairman needs to be encouraged by the state government as a way of motivating other Local Government Council Chairmen to emulate his sterling performance in providing democracy dividends to the people.
The governor noted that the money should be deployed to provide other basic amenities for the people or utilized to complete ongoing projects such as the rural electricity scheme being undertaken by the Asari Toru Council.
He commended the Chairman for justifying the mandate of the people by delivering dividends of democracy to the people and advised him not to relent but to continue to be accountable to the people, stressing that winning subsequent elections would be based on performance.
The State Chief Executive used the opportunity to advice the people of the area to ensure that they register for the forthcoming voters registration exercise because the state government would demand the voters card or that of parents before citizens can access some government facilities.
Responding to questions, the governor said the state government supports the campaign for one man, one vote, assuring that the 2011 election would be free, fair and credible while cautioning the Council Chairman to disband his group of ‘boys’ if the report that he keeps boys that terrorise citizens is correct, or he would risk being arrested.
The governor promised to site a commercial fish farm in the area and appealed to the people of Asari Toru and Degema Council Areas to provide land for the project which would be operated without government interference.
He observed that the farm when established would provide employment opportunity for youths in the area, warning that if the expatriates coming to construct the fish farm are disturbed, the project would be taken away to another LGA that needs it.
Earlier, the Chairman of Asari Toru Local Government Area, Mr Ojukaye Flagg Amachree, said he was motivated to deliver service to his people through the instrumentality of the state governor who is a role model in leadership.
Mr Flagg Amachree disclosed that his administration had undertaken a number of projects which include rural electrification in eight communities, a Council Secretariat and legislative chamber amongst others.
