‘Expose Asarama Crisis Sponsors’
In a bid to forestall any repeat of the recent Asarama crisis in which more than nine people were wounded, some of them fatally, Chairman of Andoni Local Government Council, Mrs Emilia Gilbert Nte, has urged the police and other security agencies to unmask the masterminds of the disturbances.
While commending the timely intervention of both the Swift Operation Squad (SOS) and the police in the area, which checked any further escalation, Mrs Nte insisted that unless sponsors of the crisis were made public, they could create more havoc in the near future.
The Chairman who expressed these views in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, yesterday said, until the unfortunate Asarama incident, Andoni local government had enjoyed relative peace in the nearly one year she has been in office.
Mrs Nte who credited the modest achievements made by Andoni council under her watch, to the relative peace, massive stakeholders participation and a purposeful legislative assembly, said the police must leave no stone unturned in unravelling the immediate and remote causes of the disturbances.
Owing to the relative peace enjoyed the Chairman explained that the Local government area initiated and completed projects with direct bearing to the people and would not allow avoidable security concerns like the Asarama example to hinder the progress thus far made.
The projects include construction of a new Legislative Assembly, complete with modern furnishing, debatably the best in the state, opening and grading of the Unyanada/Gahlee, 3.1 Kilometre road, 370 metre double box curvet in Asarama, reconstruction of health centres in Oyorokoto, Ajaga and Isiodun as well as the expansion of the commerce and industry facility.
Others include construction of a landing jetty, complete with waiting hall at Ngo, renovation and furnishing of the governor’s lodge, complete with a new security house, sinking of boreholes in all 11 wards of the LGA, running of electric lines from Ngo through Agwutobolo, covering 10 communities and procurement of three 1,000KVA generating plants for electric power supply.
The rest include renovation of the council secretariat, procurement of four service vehicles and training and empowerment of more than 350 women and youths.
