NYC Advocates Stiff Punishment For Youth Restiveness Sponsors
The National Youth Council (NYC) has advocated stiff disciplinary measure for any money-bag and top politician that engages or instigates youths to forment trouble in the forthcoming 2011 general elections.
Reacting to the recent protest by some youths tagged ex-militants in Abuja, the National Vice President of the council, Mr. Marvin Yorbana noted that those youths that embarked on the action were sponsored by those he described as money-bags and top politicians using them for their selfish interests.
Mr. Yorbana who spoke to The Tide at the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa said the youth protest in Abuja was uncalled for and not in the good interest of the country at this time of the nation’s democracy.
He spoke of the sincerity of the federal government in actualising its plans and programmes for the ex-militants and called for the involvement of youths in the activities and policies of the government at all levels.
“The Federal government is sincere about the amnesty programme. But while we acknowledge that, we want the government to involve youths in its plans and actions to give them a sense of belonging” pointing out that “if you train people and do not take good care of them, they are bound to feel frustrated”.
He, however, said NYC is working on how to enlighten Nigerian youths on the evils of involving in criminal tendencies as well as engage them in meaningful ventures.
His words; “we will engage our youths in meaningful activities and sensitise them on how to be self-reliant”, and urged the federal and state governments to fulfil their various parts of the amnesty programme to check repeat of the unwholesome act in the future.
He remarked that if the youths were given the chance, they can effectively and peacefully rule the country insisting that “it is not our culture to destroy but for the present circumstances beyond our control and poor governance”.
