Essay Competition: MGSS Emerges Winner
The students of Methodist Girls’ Secondary School, Utu/Ikpe, EssienUdim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State stole the show at the award ceremony for the 2nd Essay Competition on Environment of NkaUnwana IkpeAnnang by emerging 1st and 2nd place winners respectively.
The first and second place winners were Miss Matilda E Udofia and Miss Nyakno I Umoh while Master Christopher Ekpemaha from Comprehensive Secondary School, IkpeAnnang took the third position.
The first place winner took home N20,000 cash prize, a certificate and a giant golden trophy for the school, the first runner-up carted away N15,000 and a certificate while the second runner-up was rewarded with N10,000 and a certificate.
The ceremony also featured the 9th edition of NkaUnwanaIkpeAnnang Inter Primary Schools Quiz won by the representatives of Methodist School, IkpeAnnang, followed closely by St. Thomas School.
Unlike their secondary school counterparts, the winners of the inter primary schools quiz were only rewarded with educational materials to encourage them to further their learning, while another giant golden trophy was presented to Methodist School, IkpeAnnang that produced the champions.
It could be recalled that in the maiden edition of NkaUnwana Essay Competition, students of the school swept the three positions and went home with certificates and trophy for the school.
The 2017 edition of NkaUnwanaIkpeAnnang Inter Primary Schools Quiz, 9th in the series and 2nd Essay competition which took place at Government Primary School, IkpeIkot Abiat under the chairmanship of Mr. Patrick Akpan was flagged off with opening quiz between Methodist School, IkpeAnnang and St. Thomas Catholic School, MbiabetIkpe which the former won with ten points to six to proceed to the next round.
Declaring the event open, the chairman suggested that the programme be conducted in the mother tongue Annang dialect to encourage its usage by the children and teachers for better understanding.
He used the opportunity to call on sons and daughters of Ikpe clan at home and in the diaspora for support to NkaUnwanaIkpeAnnang, organisers of the event to widen its scope.
Also speaking, a prominent son of IkpeOniong Ono in the clan, Sir E. U. Nkem, who sponsored the essay competition explained that he decided to support the organizers to include the importance of tree planting to our environment to show that if we can plant enough trees to replace the ones cut, the erosion menace threatening the landscape of Akwaibom state could be reduced.
Nkem, a retired environmentalist, congratulated NkaUnwana for their consistency in promoting learning among the young ones through this programme and urged the participants to embrace the quiz programme and essay competition with all the seriousness they deserve.
Others like Prince Alfred Udoutin, SylvanusObot and Chief John Matthew Udoh who spoke in their goodwill messages, described the exercise as a step in the right direction and urged the children to study hard and look up to God for success rather than indulge in examination malpractice to succeed.
