The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has charged port operators and maritime stakeholders to curb the wastage of resources as presently witnessed at the various ports in the country.
Speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt, Saturday, the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, NPA, Dr Sokonte Davies, said that if the various stakeholders in the ports operations did the right things it would always curb the wastage of time and resources by the relevant agencies of government and individual businessmen towards achieving international growth at the nation’s ports.
Davies said that the NPA management in collaboration with stakeholders would fashion out relevant laws and guidelines that would effectively assist and regulate the environment, especially in terms of growth.
He stressed that the expected changes in the environment could be achieved aside coming up with new relevant laws by the ports management adding that individual decision is significant in change of attitude towards the environment.
The former House of Representatives member for Bonny/Degema Constituency explained that the management of the NPA recently organized a conference on the environment with the theme: “People and Nature” as a way of evaluating the contribution of the people towards understanding their environment, especially stakeholders in the maritime sector.
The NPA Executive Director, opined that human environment needed to be properly understood in terms of the basic laws and regulations which need to be strictly followed by all stakeholders to achieve the desired results.
He said that the NPA management under the present leadership of its Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, would ensure that stakeholders’ action is always in conformity with the relevant laws in terms of the environment, adding that the ports management would not fail to invoke relevant national and international laws to protect the ports environment.
