We’re Committed To Seperation Of Powers -Wike
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nywsom Wike, says the present administration’s commitment to the separation of powers was not negotiable.
The governor stated this during the special session to commemorate the Rivers State Golden Jubilee at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, Wike said the Golden Jubilee was all about celebration of the liberty of our state from oppression and domination by the forces of darkness.
The state chief executive said a few years ago, the previous administration that was democratically elected, chose to oppress the Rivers people by locking up the hallowed chambers, which according to him, negate the principles of separation of powers.
He said during the 2015 electioneering campaigns, he promised that never again will the rights of the Rivers people be trampled upon and abused with impunity, stressing that the hallowed chambers were reopened immediately he took over office as governor.
Wike, who expressed his commitment in ensuring that the legislative arm of government functions effectively to represent the people, further said his desire to give the Rivers people dividends of democracy was total.
He told the Assembly that for the first time in the history of the state, 70 per cent of the budget has been appropriated to capital projects while 30 per cent was for recurrent expenditure.
The governor, however, noted that in spite of these, salaries and emoluments for public servants have been paid up to date and the day-to-day running of ministries, departments and agencies of government are in full swing.
Earlier, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt, Hon, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, had said the legislative arm of government was key to good governance, stressing that the 8th Assembly was committed to partnering with the executive to deliver democratic dividends to the people.
Also speaking, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Martin Amaewhule, noted that since the inception of the 8th Assembly, a total of 17 laws and 66 resolutions have been passed on the floor of the assembly.
The special session was attended by former and present members of the Assembly, as well as commissioners and special advisers.
