VC Urges Free, Fair SUG Elections

Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Rivers State University (RSU), Professor Blessing Didia, has called on the Electoral Committee (ELECO) for the 2017 Students Union Government (SUG) elections to be impartial throughout the process of the elections into the Executive Council, Students Representative Council and Students Judicial Representative Council.
The VC, who gave the charge recently during the inauguration of the electoral committee, noted that the peaceful disposition enjoyed by the university since 2015 when the present administration came on board, was largely due to the peaceful conduct of SUG elections.
Professor Didia, who was represented at the inauguration ceremony by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Boma Magnus Oruwari, called on the 12-member ELECO to work in accordance with the SUG Constitution and ensure that all qualified students who indicate interest to serve in the SUG are given equal opportunity to vie for any position in the union.
In his remarks, Chairman of the ELECO, and Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, assured Management of the University that the Committee would work according to the dictates of the SUG Constitution for the conduct of the elections, adding that the SUG, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS), the University media and other independent bodies will serve as observers in the elections.
While noting that the inauguration of the ELECO by the management of the university was not alien to the students as it is clearly stated in the SUG Constitution, Dr. Zeb-Obipi stressed that the practice had made previous elections to be free, fair and transparent.
The Electoral Committee has meanwhile released guidelines and time table for the elections, which indicate that the elections will be by Electronic Voting through the University’s website on June 21, 2017 and is open to all registered students to vote and be voted for.
Other members of the ELECO are Dr. Emylia Jaja, Dr. E. O. Ekwulo, Dr. Chukunda Franklyn, Dr. Ndokiari Boisa, Mr. C. E. Haliday, Dr. Emeka Ekenta, Dr. Nimisoere Peace Batubo, Dr. Daibi Dagogo, Dr. Joy Amesi, Mr. Ephraim Omu and Mrs. Julie Wagoha.
