RSG Committed To Restoring PH’s Beauty -Commissioner …As Akulga Moves To Tackle Flooding
The Rivers State Government has restated its determination to restore the aesthetic beauty of Port Harcourt through the demolition of illegal structures.
The State Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Hon Chinyere Igwe said this in an interview with The Tide during the demolition of make shift shops, shanties and other illegal structures along the railway line.
Mr Igwe said that the proliferation of shanties was affecting the beauty of Port Harcourt, adding that the government will not rest on its oars until it rid the city of all illegal structures.
The commissioner advised traders affected in the exercise to use market facilities built by the government to sell their goods.
In another development, the former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Akuku, Toru Local Government Council, Hon Tonye Awari Alalibo says the council would embark on regular desilting of drainages in Abonnema, headquarters of the Local Government to check the menace of flooding in the community.
Hon Alalibo said that flooding was becoming a big challenge to the people of Abonnema, stressing that his administration upon assumption of office set out programmes to tackle the problem.
The CTC Chairman who was sacked by Governor Nyesom Wike last Saturday noted that one of such programmes was to desilt the drainages with a view to ensuring continuous flow of water to the river, while regular environmental sanitation exercises have been carried out in the community.
He said that the exercise was being extended to other communities in the area.
The caretaker chairman also used the occasion to commend Governor Nyesom Wike for displaying a high level of leadership qualities in the state.
