Nigeria Spends $22bn On Food Imports – Ogbeh
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has disclosed that Nigeria spends up to $22billion yearly on the importation of food.
Ogbe, who stated this in Port Harcourt, last Wednesday, when he visited the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, explained that the importation of items like rice, sugar, milk, fish and vegetables amongst others, was not healthy for the economy of the nation.
According to him, for the past 35 years, rice worth of $5 million from Thailand was imported on a daily basis, adding that “we import sugar from Brazil at $1 billion a year, we import milk from Holland and Newzealand, yet some of the most fertile lands anywhere in the world are in Nigeria”.
He urged the royal fathers to redouble their efforts in making land available for agricultural purposes in the state, acknowledging that Rivers State has no School of Agriculture, and stressed the need for the Federal Government to partner with the Rivers State Government, to establish one in the state.
In his remark, the Amanyanabo of Opobo, HRM Dandeson Douglas Jaja recalled the discovery of oil in the region which led to the decline in agricultural activities.
Jaja who is also the Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council, called on the Federal Government to be proactive in ensuring that lands in the Niger Delta region are made more suitable for agricultural activities.
“When we talk about land, one would wonder where this land is, “Is it the land that has been polluted by oil explorations and exploitations and the pollutions on the seas?” he queried.
In her remark, the Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs Onimim Jack disclosed that a similar meeting of the council was held in the state about 30 years ago and thanked the FMARD for giving the state the opportunity to host the national council meeting.
According to Jack, the meeting of the Minister with the traditional council members was hinged on the fact that the chiefs are the custodians of the land.
