NIG Okays Barring Of Telecoms Operators
Mr Lanre Ajayi, President, Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) last Friday in Lagos commended the barring of telecoms operators from lottery related activities.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday announced the ban.
Ajayi told newsmen on Friday in Lagos that telecoms service providers should focus on their core telecoms activities.
He said that the operators should ensure quality service delivery to their customers instead of bugging them with lottery related promos.
The information Technology (IT) expert noted that there were companies licensed to carry our lottery activities, hence, telecoms operators should not go into such activities.
“The lottery activities should be left to the lottery companies while telecoms activities should be left to telecoms companies.
“I consider the ban of telecoms operators from lottery activities by NCC as appropriate,” the NIG boss stressed.
Report say that, displeased by the frequent promotions in lottery forms by telecoms service providers, NCC ordered the operators to stop further lottery related activities.
NCC also ordered them to desist from charging premium rates for non-premium services.
The commission said this directive was premised on its statutory responsibility to protect the interests of consumers against unfair practices.
Beside, there are incessant complaints from Nigerians about telecoms operators’ unsolicited lottery activities and SMS.
