ExxonMobil Shuts Lagos Hqtrs
The Lagos headquarters of United States-based oil major, ExxonMobil, has been shut, following a standoff with blue-collar oil unions over the sacking of 150 Nigerian workers in ExxonMobil.
Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), yesterday, besieged the office of the oil giant, protesting the sacking of Nigerian workers.
The standoff is coming on the heels of a similar development last Wednesday in Ukpenekang Community in Akwa Ibom State, where angry youth disrupted the operations of the company over the sacking of contract workers from the area.
The protesters, numbering over 1,000, barricaded entry points to the company with boats, coffins, leaves and placards, with different inscriptions.
The Chairman of the ExxonMobil Branch of PENGASAN, Mr. Paul Eboigbe, confirmed the closure of the company’s Lagos office.
He said management of the company issued sack letters to workers, while negotiations were still going on.
He said the union had to resist the action of the management and went ahead to shut down the Exxonmobil headquarters.
Eboigbe directed the company’s workers at offshore locations to shut down rigs.
The unionist said the company’s management disregarded laid down procedures and humiliated workers by serving them sack letters when all avenues to achieve a peaceful resolution were yet to be explored.
The South-West Branch Chairman of PENGASSAN, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, said that picketing of ExxonMobil office was also being carried out by members of the union.
Korodo noted that the picketing was as a result of the anti-labour practices of the company.
He urged the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity to take up the anti-labour practices of International Oil Companies, operating in Nigeria.
Korodo disclosed that the national body of the union had said that its members would embark on strike after the New Year holidays, if nothing was done to resolve the situation.
He said, “This is just the beginning of our strike against injustice against our members working with IOCs.
“Our members now wear red clothes and put leaves on their trucks to show the injustice by these people.
“We have resolved to commence strike next year if government does not find a solution to the exploitation by IOCs.”
The Manager, Media and Communications of ExxonMobil, Mr. Oge Udeagha, said the company was always evaluating its operations.
He said, “We invest for the long-term and focus on maintaining a stable, well-developed workforce and are committed to treating our employees with respect in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
“This is a limited programme that will impact a relatively small fraction of employees,’’ he said of the disengaged workers.
“Special benefits specifically introduced for this purpose will be paid to affected employees, consistent with existing labour agreements.
“The company is also arranging special programme to support the transition from the company for those affected.
“We respect the rights of our workforce and will continue to engage with them to resolve this situation.”
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress Christian Leaders Forum has expressed strong confidence in the capacity of All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress) candidates in the state to deliver effective governance if elected into office in the coming elections.
The State Coordinator of the forum, Archbishop Lucky Aroh, made this known during a breakfast and thanksgiving meeting held in Port Harcourt, where leaders gathered to pray for the stability of the party and the safety of its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.According to him, the meeting was convened to seek divine intervention for peace, unity, and security among APC candidates across Rivers State.
“Today we are praying for APC stability in Rivers State and the security of our candidates that have been elected to contest the 2027 elections. It is a breakfast meeting,” Aroh said.
He further expressed optimism that the party’s candidates would not disappoint the people if entrusted with leadership responsibilities.
“They will not fail when elected into office. We are here as fathers of the land to let them know, and I must tell you the truth that these are the authentic people that will do well in Rivers State,” he added.
Speaking earlier, the National Chairman of the forum, Professor Olanrewaju Abraham, commended the Rivers State chapter for organizing the programme, noting that the national body of the forum believes strongly in the power of prayer.
He stated that political leadership provides an opportunity to influence society positively, including advancing moral and spiritual values, while expressing confidence that APC candidates at all levels would emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
Also speaking, the Rivers State Women Leader of the APC, Hon. Darling Amadi, praised the forum for its commitment to prayers for peace, stability, and the protection of party candidates.
Represented by the Deputy Women Leader of the party in the state, she described the initiative as commendable and urged other political and support groups within the party to emulate the gesture in promoting unity and stability.

The awards, which formed part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, were formally presented on Tuesday at the Ministry of Information and Communications in Port Harcourt.
Presenting the awards was Hon. Abdul Hameed Oladipupo Alli, popularly known as “Mr. Nigeria,” Publisher of Asiwaju Trumpet Magazine and Achievers World International Magazine.
