Mrs Amaechi Tasks FIDA On Women Right, Dev
Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi has challenged the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria to rise up to their obligations by ensuring that women and children rights are protected in the society.
Dame Amaechi made the call yesterday during the opening ceremony of the National Executive Committee meeting of FIDA held at the Rivers State House of Assembly main auditorium, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Represented on the occasion by the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Manuela Izunwa, Mrs Amaechi stated that it was in her bid to give women and children a sense of belonging that she established the Empowerment Support Initiatives ( ESI) in the state , adding that the state government is proud of FIDA’s programmes and wished them fruitful deliberations.
In her opening remarks, the chairman of the occasion, Justice Dezine Okocha lauded FIDA for its commitment in championing the cause of women and children in the society, saying that they have always been in the vanguard condemning violence and other forms of ill-treatment visited on women by society.
Also speaking, the country’s Vice President, FIDA Nigeria, Mrs Ezinwa Okoroafor lauded the state branch of the organization for accepting to host the NEC meeting and thanked the delegates for attending.
In his good will message, the state branch chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barr Boms Wondi said the state NBA is proud of FIDA’s work and assured the group of NBA support.
Earlier in her welcome address, the state chairmperson of FIDA, Mrs Florence Fiberesima explained that the FIDA NEC is composed of the branch chairpersons and their secretaries, adding that the association cuts across all the countries of the world.
In her lecture entitled “ Women Rights and Wills” the dean, faculty of law, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt , Mrs Bumi Akaakar noted that poverty has become the factor militating against the protection of women rights in the country.
She opined that the nation constitution estrined equal rights for men and women and urged members of the association to maintain their stand in ensuring that women and children are given their position in the country.
