Ogoni Journalists Mourn Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr
The umbrella body of all
practicing journalists of Ogoni extraction, the Ogoni Journalists Platform, has expressed sadness and pain over the passing of one of its own, Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr. last Tuesday in London, United Kingdom.
In a statement in Port Harcourt, the OJP said its members have been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden demise of one of its vibrant, endowed and resourceful colleagues and great son of Ogoni and Rivers State, Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr., who has contributed immensely to the success story of the struggle for justice, particularly for minorities even beyond the shores of African continent.
The OJP said it was further worried, considering the vacuum created by his absence, noting that Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr was a beacon of hope, with great expectations on him by the people of Ogoni and minorities all over the world, having served in various capacities in government, particularly in the Presidency, and as an International journalist, with priority in advocating the respect of rights of the suppressed minorities.
It expressed sadness with the fact that Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr. few hours before the unfortunate incident, was in serious communication with partners on the process to commence a world-class media and communication outfit in Nigeria, with headquarters in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital.
“This was an initiative aimed at addressing the challenge of unemployment and joblessness in the region as well as boosting the activities and programmes to promote the struggle for justice and respect for the fundamental rights of the citizens,” the group said.
The body, however, sympathized with the Ogoni people, particularly the Wiwa family over the loss, and called on its members and all lovers of the struggle for justice not to be deterred by this incident, but to fully participate in the burial events, as may be arranged by the family.
