The Rivers State Police Command says it has smashed a baby factory operating in Etche Local Government Area of the state.
A statement by the command’s spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command acted on a tip-off to apprehend the operators of the baby factory.
Omoni said one male and three pregnant females were arrested in the operation.
He also stated that a group of boys namely, Andrew Ogah, Ozoemena Okeke and Helen Ozoemena-Okeke were arrested by the Rumuepirikom Division of the command in connection with a case of circulating fake currency notes.
He said, “They were said to have photocopied the N500 and N1,000 denomination and were arrested when Andrew went to deposit the money in a new generation bank.”
“The Anti-Cultism Unit of the command also on October 18, 2016, acting on intelligence, smashed a baby factory at Igbo-Etche where one Reginald Akagbuto and four pregnant teenage girls were arrested.
“Oluchi Okorie, Chidinma Joseph, Ngozi Ekere, Miracle Michael were arrested from the baby factory.
The command’s spokesman said that when interviewed on camera, the suspects confessed to have agreed with the proprietor of the illegal factory to sell the babies for N150,000 and N100,000 depending on the sexes of the children.
While the male child is for N150,000, the female is for N100,000, the spokesman added.
“They attributed the desire to sell the babies to lack of care and denial from their purported fathers.
“They are still helping the Police at the Anti-Cultism Unit and will be arraigned as soon as possible.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Omoni Nnamdi, advised the public to be careful with the antics of these criminals whose stock in trade is to defraud unsuspecting customers and clients.
He also charged them to be wary of the fake Naira currencies in circulation, especially within the Mgbuoba Area of Port Harcourt.
