189.750 For Family Planning In Rivers
Not fewer than 189,750 families embraced family planning in Rivers State between January and September, 2016, according to figures released by the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) in the state.
A breakdown of the figure shows that 29,300 were new family acceptors, while 160, 450 were old and ancillary family planning acceptors.
The state Project Officer, Emmanuel Owor, in a statement made available to The Tide, said that the statistics show a 31.5 per cent increase as compared to last year.
It also said that 25 family planning providers were trained as a way of improving service and personnel across the state.
He revealed that a new service called VIA was now being provided to women of reproductive age, adding that, “this is a service procedure that every woman of reproductive age needs to access, at least, three times during the reproductive age bracket.”
The VIA service had commenced in 2012, and is now available in all PPFN family planning clinics, he said.
On what the body was doing to reach out to young persons as part of measures to raise reproductive health, Owor stated that the PPFN has, through its Family Life Education and Counselling (FLE&C) programme, empowered some youth volunteers.
The programme was conducted in 10 post primary schools and five youth groups during the period, he added.
He said, “Family Life Education and Counselling programme is designed and implemented to assist and prepare adolescents and youth to manage their myriad physical and emotional problems as young people grow up, so this helps them to make right choices and responsible decisions about their sexuality, fertility and life expectations.”
The PPFN state project officer, however, commended the Rivers State Government for its support towards mobilizing and sensitizing the public on the need to embrace family planning.
Explaining why couples should embrace family planning, Owor argued that the current economic realities have shown that it was wise and sensible for one to have the number of children that he or she can cater for.
