Banigo Makes Case For The Girl Child
As Nigerians join the rest of the world to mark this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has called for the annihilation of obnoxious laws that undermine the wellbeing of women especially the girl-child in the country.
In a statement in Port Harcourt, Banigo sued for a sustained measure that would check the high incidence of unfavourable laws against women and the girl-child in the society.
She stressed the need for the introduction of a speedy process of achieving justice in cases such as rape, early child marriage and female genital mutilation, among other forms of abuses perpetrated against women and children.
Banigo said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Girls Progress, Goals Progress: a Global Girl Data Movement,” calls for increased action in the collection and analysis of sex-disaggregated data, which serves as impediment to respond effectively to the specific needs of the girl-child.
The deputy governor, who observed that most of the violence against women in the society today, are self-inflicted, further stressed the need for society to invest more on the girl-child, in the areas of education, health, safety and rights to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Agenda which seeks the improvement of data on the girl-child who is daily abused.
As a vulnerable group, Banigo stated that the girl-child needs adequate protection against all forms of harmful traditional practices, urging parents and the society to speak out towards creating more awareness and attention for the girl-child to enable her actualize her God-given potential.
