NIMASA Urges PH Port Dredging
The Director General, Ni
gerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside, has reiterated the need for the dredging of the water channel to Port Harcourt Port, Rivers State.
Peterside made the assertion during a stakeholders’ interactive session organised by NIMASA, Eastern Zone, in Port Harcourt Wednesday.
He said the port which was established a very long time ago was currently facing draft challenges and urgent need to dredge the river so as to enable bigger vessels to sail to the port.
The NIMASA boss noted that there was need to support in upgrading the infrastructure which where obsolete, adding that it had made some importers from the South East to ship their goods to western ports in Lagos.
He also decried the activities of security personnel at different check-points in the state who extorted all sorts of levy from importers using the Eastern ports, pointing out that there are well over 30 checkpoints before containers were being transported to their destinations at Onitsha or any of the Eastern States from the ports.
The Director General disclosed that the issue is being addressed by the Federal Ministry of Transport.
On training and certification of seafarers, he enjoined all to upgrade their certificates to standard in line with the decision reached at the Manila convention, adding that henceforth, certificates to seafarers would be issued to them after one month of training.
Peterside, who also addressed other issues bordering on smooth maritime operations at the Eastern ports assured that NIMASA of today is not that of yesterday as it is now a global voice in the maritime industry, and that synergy between the agency and the stakeholders, would take the industry to the next level.
At the interactive session which was attended by stakeholders from all walks of the industry, including those from Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, issues involving vessel clearance, security at waterways, sensitisation on cabotage on board vessels, sharp practices on payments, certification of operators, renewal of vessels, synergy between NIMASA Headquarters and zones, sea protection levy of three per cent, freight differential, seafarers welfare, among others were addressed.
