Bayelsa Plans To Assist Diabetic Patients
Bayelsa State is now carrying out a research on how to save the lives of hundreds of diabetic patients spreading across the state through the planting of the miracle plant (Thaumatoccocus danielii), expected to be a substitute for sugar.
This is just as Governor Timipre Sylva stressed the need for full compliance of Environmental Impact Assessment on all Government projects, companies and individuals.
Making this known at the 2010 World Environment Day on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Environment, Mrs. Victoria Dedenu, said the Ministry was investigating the availability of the plant, adding that it would serve as substitute for diabetic patient in the state.
Aside the planting of the miracle tree, the Commissioner disclosed that plans are on hand to survey Edumanon Game Reserve to determine the status of the chimpanzee and white throated monkey in the Apoi Creek Forest Reserve.
Also, the ministry in conjunction with Shell Petroleum Development Company is carrying out a Biodiversity Action plan for the Biodiversity Conservation of the Taylor Creek Forest Reserve.
Speaking in the same vein, Governor Sylva, identifying threats to Biodiversity, said it included habitat destruction, environmental pollution, erosion and land degradation among other things.
Based on this development, the governor, thereby stressed the needs for the constitution of the reserves, adding that it would be given priority in the states subsequent budget.
He said, the resources of other sites of conservation interest identified in the state will also be studied and be given urgent consideration.
