Wike Mourns Late Nsirim
Activities in Government House last week started with
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, charging Rivers United Football Club to work towards winning the nation’s Federation Cup.
In a chat with players during a half time break at the Gen. Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia on Saturday, Governor Wike challenged them to win forthcoming quarter finals match to advance to the semi-finals of the Federation Cup, pledging that he would reward them with monetary gifts.
Responding, team manager, Stanley Eguma commended Governor Wike for giving priority attention to Rivers United. On her part, the Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, attributed the victory of Rivers United over Shooting Stars of Ibadan during last Sunday’s match to the personal maturation and presence of Governor Wike.
On the same last Sunday, the Deputy Governor attended the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Rivers Region headquarters at Igwuruta. The church service attended by wife of the overseer, Pastor Folu Adeboye was a United Worship for all the branches in Region V.
The Deputy Governor said the emergence of Governor Wike was anchored on divine providence, recalling the visit of Pastor Adeboye to the state few days to the Supreme Court judgement.
Chief Wike, last Monday, met with medical practitioners and announced plan by the state government to introduce a finance intervention scheme to assist private hospitals to improve their facilities and operational environment.
According to the governor, the private hospitals loan scheme will cover those in urban and rural areas, with 500 health facilities billed to benefit from the programme.
The governor visited Rumuodomanya, Rumuokoro and Okoronuodu market and motor park last Tuesday, Chief Wike said he was worried over the booming street market and would not want them to endanger their lives by hawking and selling on the main road.
After inspecting some parts of the market and another land behind the Fire Station Office, the governor addressed the traders and announced that government would relocate them to a spacious and better place.
He disclosed that the Motor Park at Rumuokoro has been taken over by the state government.
Last Wednesday, Governor Wike was among dignitaries that attended a special lecture and symposium in honour of late Hon. Ovunda Nsirim, a Second Republic House of Representatives member, and son of Apiti of Rumueme, Nyenweli Omunakwe Nsirim. Wike described late Nsirim as exemplary, friendly and honest politician which other politicians must emulate.
The governor also attended the late Nsirim’s burial service at Rumueme Town on Saturday. Before attending the service, Governor Wike had visited the site of the burnt INEC office in Bori, where he condemned those behind the arson, linking it to plans to scuttle the supplementary re-run elections slated for July 30, 2016.
Last week, while addressing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Etche on Thursday during a rally in Okehi, Wike picked holes in the recent police posting to the state, saying it was a ploy to reverse the gains made so far to curb crime and other social vices. On the same Thursday, the governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Sir Kenneth Kobani, spoke at the 5th Triennial Conference Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Port Harcourt and assured that workers salary and welfare remain his focus despite economic crunch.
Wike with other top government functionaries attended one day prayer for peace and security in Nigeria organised by Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt at Corpus Christi Cathedral. He sued for more prayers for the stability and unity of Nigeria and Rivers State.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
