Maritime Truck Owners Seek Minister’s Assistance On Truck Terminal
The Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) has urged the Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, to assist it in completing its modern trucks terminal.
Chief Remi Ogungbemi, President of the association, made the plea in a statement in Lagos on Friday.
Ogungbemi said the truck operators had commenced the construction work on the terminal in Ilu-Eri in Ijora, Lagos State.
He said the project was capital intensive, hence the need for the transport minister to lend his helping hand toward its completion.
“As movers of sea ports, we have recognised the fact that no government in the whole world can provide all the amenities and infrastructure needed by the citizens.
“We on our part have decided to develop and build a modern trucks terminal. Discussion has reached an advanced stage with the relevant authorities.
“This modern trucks terminal when fully completed and commissioned will accommodate 2,000 or more trucks,’’ he said.
“Our plea is that you should use your good offices to assist us in realising our dream of constructing a befitting modern terminal,” Ogungbe said.
According to him, this will help to ease the traffic jams and gridlocks being experienced in all the ports’ access roads and its environs.
Ogungbemi said the genesis of the traffic jams and gridlock was traceable to the era before port concession.
“The concession arrangement compounded the problem which necessitated parking of trucks at places considered to be unauthorised,” he said.
