Fire Service Assures On Fire Outbreaks Prevention
The Director in charge of
Federal Fire Service, South South command, Port Harcourt, Mr Njoku Chika, has expressed his command’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate of enlightening members of the public on the measures needed to prevent fire outbreaks.
Chika, a Deputy Controller, Fire (DCF) disclosed the command’s plans last Friday while speaking to The Tide on the sidelines of fire safety programme organised by the South South Command of the service.
The fire chief explained that the programme was a maiden edition of others to follow soon said the programme was targeted at staff of federal government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
He said creating awareness is one of the main reasons of the service to operate in Rivers State.
According to him, his men are always out on a daily basis to enlighten members of the public on the negative and positive impacts as regards fire safety.
He added that plans are in top gear to visit public places like schools, markets and motor parks to organize enlightenment campaigns and lectures to enable the public be abreast on measures to take in averting outbreak of fire.
Apart from these, the fire boss reiterated the need for people to take preventive measures both at homes and working places in order to avert fire outbreak.
Some of such measures, he explained, include owning of fire extinguishers at home.
He described some of the fire extinguishers as Co2, dry chemical powder even as he disclosed that they are all purpose fire extinguisher.
The Director equally advised against the use of water type of fire extinguisher at homes and offices due to the fact that water is a good conductor of electricity.
“At times, people may mistakenly use them on electrical appliances and be electrocuted in the process”, he said.
He expressed satisfaction on the success recorded at the awareness programme.
“Infact, I am happy to see a large turnout of participants at the programme”, he said.
On the major challenge facing the command, Chika said, “I have to tell you the fact, we do not have firefighting equipment”.
He however expressed the hope that action towards equipping the command was in progress, even as he disclosed that he has been given assurance that soonest the command would have a fire truck amongst other important equipment and accessories.
